  • 2 tbsp freshly ground cardamom pods

Instructions

For the Dough:

  1. 1. Warm the milk in a saucepan until steaming but not boiling. Remove from heat and stir in the active dry yeast and a teaspoon of sugar. Let sit for five minutes until bubbly.
  2. 2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, remaining sugar, salt, and ground cardamom.
  3. 3. Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it along with softened butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until combined into a soft dough.
  4. 4. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about ten minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size—about one hour.
  5. 5. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle about half an inch thick. Cut strips of dough and twist them into knots or rolls.
  6. 6. Place shaped buns onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and allow them to rise again for thirty minutes while preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for approximately twenty minutes or until golden brown.
